Why Choose a Labrador Retriever For 17 years straight the Labrador Retriever has been America’s favorite purebred dog, according to registration numbers with the American Kennel Club. The Lab is generally loving, playful and an impressively intelligent breed. The Labrador Retriever’s origin was Newfoundland. Exactly how the breed came to inhabit Newfoundland is not known. The first accounts of the breed were in 1822. Over the years, Labrador Retrievers have been used as guide dogs for the blind, deaf and other handicapped individuals because of their trainability, temperament, intelligence, and social disposition. Labs have been used in nursing homes for the elderly and emotionally challenged children and adults. The military and many police squads use the breed for tracking criminals, weapons, bombs, drugs, and to find people buried in land and snow slides. The Pointing Lab is best known for their love of the hunt. They have strong noses that easily pick up the scent, they are powerful swimmers in adverse conditions, and have a natural instinct to point. Pointing Labradors are strong in upland hunting as well as waterfowl. The Lab is easy to train and eager to please. Most Labs can begin command training at 6 to 7 months. We usually recommend short session of 7 to 10 minutes 2 to 3 times a day. Remember that your dog needs regular exercise. Plan to walk your dog daily. Playing catch with your dog gives the Lab a chance to play and exercise. Keep your dog trim and don’t over feed. Always buy from a reputable breeder. A good breeder will provide a health certificate, make sure the puppy has had all the appropriate shots, they should be AKC registered, and they will provide you with a family tree. Congratulations on a wise choice. Your Pointing Lab will bring you the best of all worlds.
