The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland. Many people presume that the Lab came from Labrador because of their name. Not so! Newfoundland was populated with small water dogs. The residence began breeding these small water dogs with Newfoundlands to produce a breed that was referred to as the St. John's Water Dog. These dogs became the prototype for the Labrador Retriever of today. The Earl of Malmesbury in the 19th century saw one of these prototypes and had it imported in 1830. Colonel Hawker was a noted sportsman of the day and referred to the Labrador Retriever as "the best hunting dog for any kind of shooting. He noted that the Lab was generally black, no larger than a Pointer, quick, strong, and had a great sense of smell." It was the Duke of Malmesbury
that named the dogs, "Labrador dogs."
The breed eventually died out in Newfoundland due to a heavy tax burden
on dog owners and quarantine laws. Accurate pedigrees of today's
Labs go back as far as 1878. The Lab was recognized as a distinct
breed by the English Kennel Club in 1903. The first registration
of Labradors by the AKC was in 1917.
